German is not classified as a Romance language. Romance languages are Latin of origin and include French, Spanish and Italian.
West Germanic language is mainly spoken in Western Europe and Central Europe. It is the most widely spoken and official or co-official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and the Italian province of South Tyrol.
As a percentage of the total population, the largest share of around 95 per cent is in Liechtenstein. A total of about 95.9 million people worldwide speak German as their mother tongue.
