A History of the Philippines by José Burniol
In writing this little book our aim has been to put before the students of the Ateneo a history of the Philippines that will be free from bias and prejudice and while brief will still be complete aii sro recent events, We have endeavoured to collect within the compass of a few pages as many facts as possible, bearing in mind the while that text-books should whet the appetite for knowledge and quicken an eagerness to study historical events more closely in the detail of copious works, archives, and special documentary sources.
Our work is divided into three main periods taken from the history of Spain, which naturally ¿controlled happenings in the Philippines. Each division is prefaced by a general summary that, as from a focus, throws a concentrated light upon all the events of the period.
The narrative of the facts in detail will follow in the main chronological order of the governors. We have been sparing critical discussion, especially when touching on matters of recent date, as the limitations of a textbook are required.
Finally, the history appears both in English and Spanish that pupils may avail themselves of either tongue according to their need or wish. - Strive, my young friends, to be Filipinos of such worth and achievement that the future history Of your country may ‘be proud to inscribe your names ‘on its glorious pages.
