In the present work, the effort has accordingly been made to bring together such a selection of " Facts and Fancies " as will fairly represent the needs of the ordinary reader. In this task, the author trusts he has succeeded and desires to call attention to the following points:
The articles — over 5000 in number — have been carefully selected from a very wide range of topics, and represent much that is important, curious, quaint, and unique in history, literature, science, art, and nature. (2) In order to secure space for a large number of articles, they have generally been made concise, — thus affording room for many that must otherwise have been excluded. (3) The topics included comprise noteworthy historical events; civil, military, and religious institutions; scientific facts and theories; natural curiosities; famous buildings, monuments, statues, paintings, and other works of art and utility; celebrated literary productions; sobriquets and nicknames; literary pseudonyms; mythological and imaginary characters; political and slang terms; derivations of peculiar words and phrases; etc.
